Here are three tips to help reduce the chance
of unexpected downtime related to cable
management plans:
1
CHOOSE THE RIGHT CHARGING
LOCATION
When choosing locations for charging
stations, consider their placement relative
to workflow (including direction of travel),
location of forklift charge ports and cable
management requirements. Ensure there
is sufficient space to properly position
your forklift for charging, especially if you
intend to co-locate two or more forklift
battery charging stations. If there is not
enough space, certain charging stations
might be underutilized, leading to others
being used more often and accelerating
the wear and tear on their cables
and connectors.
2
KEEP THE RIGHT CHARGING
ACCESSORIES ON HAND
Many cable management accessories are
designed to secure charging cables and
keep them off the floor to help prevent
cable damage and clutter. Crown’s V-Force
accessories include charger stands,
pogo sticks, tender kits, adjustable cable
retractors and robust connectors, handles
and strain relief protectors.
3
One way to think of it is in terms of the 5S
concept, the five-step lean methodology
that creates a more organized and
productive workspace. The five steps—
sort, straighten, shine, standardize and
sustain—can help guide warehouse
managers through choosing and
maintaining the right charging locations.
This can include ensuring the area around
the charging station is free of clutter,
organizing the stations to allow for a
smooth workflow, and standardizing the
charging process.
TRAIN OPERATORS ON CHARGING
PROCEDURES
Finally, make sure that proper charging
and cable management is a part of your
forklift operator training program. Operators
should understand the importance of
cable management and how to properly
position the lift truck within the charging
station to avoid bending or straining cables.
Other best practices include inspecting
connections frequently to make sure they
are secured, noting damaged cables or
connectors, and observing the proper
sequence to ending a charging session and
disconnect the charger from the battery.
