UTILIZE YOUR BATTERY PLANNED
MAINTENANCE (PM) SERVICE
REMEMBER YOUR CHARGERS
When determining the number of batteries
needed, it is important to remember you
also must determine the quantity and type
of chargers you need to support your
fleet. Data from your battery and fleet
management systems will help inform
this decision. The number of chargers
you need will also depend on the type of
chargers you use – whether conventional,
fast or opportunity charging. Consider
whether you need chargers that can be
configured to charge lithium-ion and leadacid batteries. One factor often overlooked
regarding chargers is cable management
between the charger and the battery
or forklift. Failure to properly route and
support charging cables can accelerate
wear, tear and breakage of connectors,
which can lead to charging and power
failures. Cable management is discussed
further in Chapter 5.
A battery PM program is designed to
reduce unexpected downtime and related
service costs while extending battery life
and performance as long as possible
between replacements. Lead-acid batteries
require a high level of maintenance over
their lifetime. This includes periodic battery
watering and a disciplined charging
procedure that allows for eight hours of
charge time, eight hours of cool-down time
and eight hours of use. Batteries should
be cleaned regularly with a neutralizing
detergent solution. An effective battery
PM service should also include a review of
cable management practices, especially
related to charging connectors. These
connectors have a limited life span and can
become damaged or loosened over time.

WORK CLOSELY WITH YOUR UTILITY
PROVIDER
Maintaining an open dialogue with your
utility provider about your power usage
can help ensure your provider will be able
to continue to meet your power needs
as your operation changes and grows.
Many local utility providers offer incentives
and energy rebates based on usage and
energy reduction efforts. Having a close
relationship with your utility provider may
position you to take advantage of energy
