LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES
Recent innovations and greater
accessibility have made lithium-ion
batteries a viable option for lift truck fleet
managers. Lithium-ion batteries come in
a variety of chemistries, all with different
ambient temperatures of operation, depth of
discharge and the composition of cathode
materials. Compared to lead-acid batteries,
lithium-ion batteries offer the following benefits:
NO NEED FOR EXTRA BATTERIES:
For some operations, the use of opportunity
charging lithium-ion batteries may allow
warehouse managers to maintain a 1:1
ratio of batteries to forklifts. This means
they could eliminate the need for additional
battery inventory and reclaim valuable
warehouse space.
INCREASED ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND
RUNTIME: Lithium-ion batteries can typically
be charged using up to 16% less energy
and are able to perform the same amount of
work as lead-acid batteries while using less
stored energy. With longer run time and higher
sustained voltage during operation, lithiumion batteries provide more consistent lift truck
performance and the power to get more done.
BATTERY LIFESPAN: If maintained properly,
a lithium-ion battery may last up to 9,000
charging cycles.
SPACE SAVINGS: The dimensions of lithiumion batteries are smaller than their lead-acid
counterparts. This could be a benefit for reach
truck applications where the smaller dimensions
allow for a smaller working aisle width.
REDUCED MAINTENANCE AND RISK
DURING SERVICE: Lithium-ion batteries
do not require watering or dedicated battery
rooms. They are sealed so they don’t expose
employees to hazardous gases or chemicals
that must be vented during battery servicing.
INTELLIGENT FORKLIFT INTEGRATION:
Integration of the power solution helps maintain
the performance, efficiency and safety
standards of the original design and unlock
benefits inherent in today’s more intelligent
forklifts. For instance, the Crown V-Force
Integrated Lithium-Ion System is designed to
integrate seamlessly with Crown Equipment
forklifts. The fully integrated lithium-ion forklift
system leverages the on-board intelligence in
the battery and conveys the information for the
lift truck’s systems and displays.
FASTER, MORE CONVENIENT CHARGING:
Typically, lithium-ion batteries can be charged
faster and more efficiently. Additionally, lithium-ion
power solutions can be integrated into the forklift,
so the battery doesn’t need to be removed during
recharge. These batteries typically only require a
one-hour charge for eight hours of use, can be
opportunity charged during operator breaks and
do not require a cooling period after recharge.
